Sauts Alastor - The Return of the Avenger

Ok, kali ini DtE akan menyiarkan sebuah temubual dari penulis luar bersama sebuah band bergenre gelap dari persada music tempatan.. Takmau cakap banyak, apakata kita sama2 baca temubual kali ini.. Thanks Kamil! \m/
 
The first time I saw this band on stage, "EMPEROR!" That's the first word that came to mind. So,soon after returning home from the gig I searched for Sauts Alastor (SA) on facebook. And after a while, I managed to get to interview them for DtE. These guys makes me felt proud to be Malaysian metalhead. They've set up high standards of good underground music, And now ladies and gentlements, I bring you, Sauts Alastor, our own local extreme metal act. -  \m/ Kamil



1. Sauts Alastor, (name meaning?)
"These wicked demons lives underneath the abyss of Leviathan..while the others are inhabitants of hell, the grand executor."

2. History of the band
The band was formed by me and Shaharoth somewhere around 1996. We managed to build our foundation in the scene with Sauts Monastery in 1997. The demo was spread and dedicated to BM circle of friends and fanatics around that time. We did not sell the demo but we just gave it away which makes the band unique since it's existance. The year 1999 brought the band to another level. We crafted 'The Grand Executor' released by Nebiula Production.

4. Band influences, lyrics influences?
We were influenced to write a music by the legendary Bathory, 90's scandinavian BM (and Black/death) scene in general and our dark nature lies within. Same goes to the lyrics, to potrays and glorifying the dark energies within ourselves, and able to channel the messages from it's source, the tounge of fire.

6. Issue regarding the BM scene in 2004- early 2006
To be honest, i'm not in touch with the Malaysian metal scene in general since 2002 soon after Ipoh Loudblast Anthem 2001. BM scene will strikes back with notorious acts like Black Abyss, MG34, Aradia, Imperial, DCA, Nebiras, Bazzah. Even the mighty Rator has make a comeback.

8. Achievement (gigs)
1998 we desecrated an opening of a musical store at Subang Jaya with our older materials plus a cover from Emperor and Enslaved. In 2000, we performed at Rockworld Penang (Panggilan Pulau  Puaka) with BM act Kharabanazak. 2001 Ipoh Loudblast Anthem with Eibon (Singapore), Bazzah and Nekrad. Sauts Alastor was put to rest after local media hype about BM and postponed our full length project since the band appeared in certain newspapers and local cheap magazine. November 2010 embarked a new chapter for us, serpents have been spawned within our camp, a ressurection with BM act Nebiras during 'Witching Hour' and 'Storm of Nebiula 2011' prooved that BM is not dead yet here and the response from the crowds were great and magnificent. We have unleashed and channelled the black forces of our unreleased hymns at both gigs as a sign of our returns and to bring back the glory like the older days. Our upcoming performance will be on 10th September 2011 alongside South East Asia legend IMPIETY which will be held in Penang. If everything goes well, people who supports us can get our Single CD which was scheduled to be released this coming August 2011 by Eastern Voice Production during the show.

9. Personal view on deathcore:
I got nothing to comment on deathcore bands or their respective scene except the genre is not my cup of coffee. But i believe each scenes got it's ups and downs, bright and dark sides, true and false.

10. Axology (equipment used during live performance) for all the line ups.
As for live performances, our axes varies from time to time. I've once used BC Rich Warlock, Ibanez SG, Aria and now i stick with Ibanez RG. During the early days i used BOSS MT-2 & Zoom. But since our first comeback gigs (Witching Hour 2010), i used Korg and GSP1101. Shaharoth our guitarist is currently using BC Rich Ironbird with Zoom and Korg effects. Meeroth using Ibanez bass with BOSS while Nick using various synthethisers since 2001 (Ipoh Loudblast Anthem) until 2011 (Storm of Nebiula) which were Korg M1, Korg Wavestation and Kurzweil PC3LE.

Pardon Me- Only One EP (2011)

Ah akhirnya keluar jugak product mereka ni. Band alt rock dari Shah Alam ni telah pun mengeluarkan EP sulung mereka yang berjudul Only One. Kalau lu orang sebelum ni pernah baca interview dengan mereka, lu orang barangkali dah tau macam mana sound diorang kannn. Apa, lu orang tak baca lagi interview DtE dengan diorang? Baca kat sini! Okay EP ni telah keluar pada tahun ni jugak sekitar April/May rasanya mengandungi 3 trek yang mana dua daripadanya sebelum ini telah diterbitkan dan diedar secara atas talian secara percuma di page Reverb Nation mereka, tapi telah diberi nafas baru untuk EP ini.

Terdapat pertukaran ahli sewaktu rakaman EP Only One berlangsung, tapi tak pasti pulak disebabkan ini sound mereka nyata mengalami perubahan. Well, mungkin telinga gua je kot.

Tak banyak informasi yang diberi pada inlay CD, in fact takde pun inlay! Info hanya tercatat di belakang cover CD. Artwork cover sangat simple tak perlu pening-pening tapi in a way macam rasa half baked effort pula. I don't know, lu orang rasa? Tapi barangkali Pardon Me nak stay minimalist kot.

Only One- Pembuka EP ini. Buat yang pernah dengar demo track lagu ni (yang pernah release dekat Reverbnation mereka) akan rasa macam pelik sedikit sebab arrangement telah ditukar. Dan gua mengalami WTF? moment pada pertama kali memainkan CD ni. It's essentially the same Only One cuma dah ditukar sana sini tapi masih boleh hadam pada pendengaran gua. Tapi gua macam agak frust sikit sebab energy nya macam dah tak sama seperti versi lama. Vokal Shana..aihh macam mana nak cakap. It's there but it's not as lively (and lovely) like the old version. Barangkali hanya gua tapi macam lemah sikitlah. Gitar agak ditenggelami bunyi dram yang nyata diprogramkan. Dan solo Erman, kurang impressive macam versi lama. Namun ada part-part yang menarik untuk versi baru ni,jadi takde la mengecewakan, dan bila banyak kali gua dengar it's kinda grew on me.

Power in Me - Trek baru. Personal favourite gua untuk EP ni. Lirik pun menarik, ada nilai-nilai positif wahkahkah,well,seriously cuba dengar betul-betul. Power in Me menampilkan variasi vokal yang pelbagai berbanding dua lagi trek. Gitar pun berbunyi bersungguh-sungguh. Ya tuan-tuan dan puan-puan, bunyi dram masih lagi annoying as fuck. Terlalu ke depan. Bukan itu sahaja malahan bunyi yang tak organik (bass drum clicking terlalu kuat serta cymbal yang sepesen) telah mencuri point yang bagus untuk trek ni.

Di Sana - Whoa lajunya lagu ni! Dentuman snare yang sedikit menggila di awal lagu memberi perasa pop punk kat lagu ni. Vokal Shana di awal macam tak cukup makan tapi menjadi stabil di pertengahan lagu. Lagu ni masih retain vibe dari versi lama cuma gua rasa lagi laju! Gua kurang fan dengan lagu ni sebab lenggok vokal macam tertahan-tahan, weh come on la kasi keluar semua! Di Sana merupakan sebuah trek yang biasa-biasa dan kurang bertenaga.

Overall EP Only One adalah sebuah produk yang seolah-olah terkejar-kejar (rushed), baik dari packaging hinggalah ke production, particularly. Gua rasa Pardon Me sebenarnya capable lebih dari ni tapi entah kenapa kurang menyengat. On the brighter side, lagu-lagu mereka ni memang radio friendly dan ada potensi untuk rise to the top, in due time. Personally gua rasa drum machine adalah sangat annoying dan menenggelamkan gitar dan kadang-kala, vokal. Shana dan kawan-kawan patut consider untuk pakai live drum pada recording akan datang. 3 lagu untuk EP ni adalah sedikit dan tak puas, tapi gua teka barangkali financial factor membuatkan mereka limit kepada 3 lagu sahaja. Mereka jugak patut sertakan inlay serta lirik, sebab pada gua mempunyai physical copy sesebuah produk muzik mestilah disertakan dengan menda-menda camni, barulah complete. Gua menunggu Pardon Me untuk keluar sesuatu yang lebih ooomph di masa akan datang. A so-so effort from a potential band. Come on PM, show us more!Gua tetap positif Pardon Me boleh menghasilkan produk yang lebih gempak dari yang ini.

As Sahar 6th album on halt, Wan Barchiel recording solo album

Eastern Metal pioneer, As Sahar announced that their 6th album (working title the Bugis album) will not be released anytime soon, as recording process is currently put on hold. According to conversation with Wan Barchiel on social networking page Facebook, the album is not going to see the light of the day anytime soon, and probably will be released by the end of the year. 

While this seems to be an upsetting news, coupled with Wan Barchiel's decision not to play live anymore (which indirectly means As Sahar MIGHT not perform live again as well), I was informed by the man himself that Wan Barchiel's solo album (or EP, I believe) is currently underway, with recording already took place and set to hit market in August 2011 . Wan Barchiel's one man band, called Anti-K (pronounced as Antik/Antique) still dwells in Black Metal sound (I believe we can get As Sahar sound thrown in together as well as other new elements) with strong National Romanticism themes. As of the time of writing, the title of EP is yet to be revealed. Will we get the same vibe like his previous solo effort's Olivating the Dark Shadow to Grab My Opal? I can't tell much as I myself have no idea about it. Let's just wait and see.
